The AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification System) is used for collection and searching of digital images of fingers and palms taken from suspected persons and unindentified fingerprints traces protected at crime scenes in order to fast identification of a person.

The system is used also for identifying of arrested persons, check at border crosses and to identification of dead corpses. Essence of the AFIS system is possibility to automatic code of simple track from a crime place and compare it during a few minutes with fingerprints of millions of persons.

In Poland AFIS was installed for the first time in 2000 at Fingerprint Department of the Central Forensic Laboratory of the Main Police Headquarters. There are now approximately 3.200.000 TP cards and 63.000 of unindentified fingerprints traces from crime scenes in the AFIS database. The card database contains stored on cards fingerprints taken from persons suspected of committing a crime, and tracks database contains left at crime scenes traces by unindentified criminals.

Possibilities of compare fingerprints in the AFIS system:

• traces with cards (trace - card type matching) : criminals can be detected
• a card of a perpetrator of crime with cards database (card - trace type matching) : can be detected if he is a perpetrator of other, not detected so far crimes
• traces with traces (trace - trace type matching) : different crimes committed by the same perpetrators can be detected
• identification of persons or dead corpses can be made by card - card type matching

Among the most important tasks of the AFIS system are:

• storing of fingerprint data of persons subjected to criminal registration
• storing of fingerprints data of foreigners subjected to administrative procedures based on foreigners`act
• collecting of unindentified fingerprints traces from crime scenes
• verifying of fingerprints data of persons
